Manager - Mechanical Engineering

Based in Ottawa, Ontario, the Manager of Mechanical Engineering will have a wide range of duties which ultimately focus on leading the team of engineers developing mechanical, electro-mechanical, and optomechanical product design solutions within the cross-disciplined Engineering department.

What You’ll Do:
The Manager of Mechanical Engineering will be a part of the Engineering team with the primary focus of managing the mechanical engineering resources while acting as the mechanical engineering design authority for all internally and externally developed hardware products. You will:
  • Act as the senior mechanical expert for all product platforms
  • Review and approve all product releases and product changes as the mechanical design authority
  • Define and maintain the hardware development and technology roadmaps for the department
  • Define, monitor, and control the capacity planning of the mechanical department
  • Assign and support resources allocated to internal and external hardware development projects
  • Define, implement, and maintain the hardware development processes
  • Continuously adapt the department to new standards and technologies for hardware development
  • Manage the assignment and resolution of all hardware support issues
  • Support the development and finalization of estimates related to winning new business
  • Perform yearly and semi-annual reviews and set department and resource objectives
  • Manage department budgets and monitor resource overhead levels
  • Participate in long-term corporate planning for product development and business objective execution
  • Report on department performance metrics

What You Should Bring:
The ideal candidate will have an Engineering or equivalent degree with at least 7-10 years of demonstrated mechanical product development management experience.  Additionally, you should have:
  • 7-10 years of mechanical design and product delivery experience
  • 5+ years of experience managing multiple concurrent hardware development projects
  • 5+ years of managing hardware development resources and associated processes
  • 5+ years of full product life-cycle management (cradle to grave) experience
  • 5+ years of design for test and design for manufacturability experience
  • 5+ years of developing embedded hardware products to international standards (CSA, UL, CE, etc.)
  • 5+ years of electro-mechanical product design experience
  • Experience performing mechanical modelling, simulation, and analyses (structural, static, dynamic, fatigue etc.)
  • Experience in performing FEA modelling, simulation, and analyses
  • Experience in performing CFD modelling, simulation, and analyses
  • Experience in mechanical/electrical grounding and shielding
  • Airborne mechanical (NPRD, fault tree, DO-160 etc.) or equivalent (automotive) design experience
Complimentary Experience:
Additional consideration will be given to candidates having experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Imaging detection systems (CCD, CMOS, IR/NIR, etc.)
  • Electro-optic design
  • Fiber-optic design
  • Complex electro-optical instrumentation principles (SEM, LIBS, etc.)
  • IoT (Internet of Things) architectures, software platforms and communication protocols
  • On-engine mechanical packaging experience (FADEC, ECU etc.)
  • Radiation impact analysis (SEE)
