Power Electronics Engineer

We are currently seeking a qualified Power Electronics Engineer. The role involves leading the design, development, and testing of power electronics and motor control systems for aerospace applications, ensuring compliance with industry standards such as DO-160 and MIL-STD. This role requires expertise in motor control theory, EMI/EMC design, and simulation tools to support the entire product life cycle.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and testing of power electronics systems, including analog and digital motor controllers for three-phase BLDC/PMSM motors.
  • Work through all stages of product life cycle, including requirements generation, preliminary design, peer reviews, detailed design, test plan generation, integration, and testing.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of power electronics, including analog circuits (op-amps, BJTs/FETs, passive/active filters) and digital circuits (logic ICs, microprocessors, state machines, communication protocols like ARINC-429, CAN, I²C, SPI, USB, RS-232).
  • Apply subject matter expertise in motor control theory, power and energy conservation, and compliance with relevant standards (MIL-STD-461/464, MIL-STD-704, MIL-STD-810, RTCA DO-160, DO-178, and DO-254).
  • Ensure power electronics and motor controller designs meet the rigorous requirements of aerospace applications, including EMI/EMC compliance.
  • Design and implement a clean, legible circuit schematic library and work closely with PCB designers to develop printed wiring boards (PWB) and assemblies (PWA) using Altium.
  • Model and simulate circuits using simulation tools such as P-Spice, MATLAB/Simulink, Simetrix/Simplis, PLECS, and/or Power Sim (PSIM).
  • Validate prototype designs and conduct hardware testing in lab environments to verify performance and operational functionality.
  • Lead and support the creation of high-quality technical specifications, reports, publications, and proposals, with a preference for using DOORS.
  • Manage customer interactions during pre-contract discussions, trade studies, and requirements shaping.
  • Review and assess vendor capabilities to support product development and ensure they meet necessary technical specifications.
  • Apply knowledge of SAE ARP4754 and ARP4761 as required.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent); Master's or PhD preferred.
  • 10-15+ years of experience in the development of power electronics, motor controllers, and actuation systems for aerospace applications, including deep expertise in EMI/EMC design and DO-160 compliance.
  • 5+ years of experience with Altium.
  • 15+ years of experience with atleast 5kVA 3-phase AC systems.
  • Advanced proficiency with MIL-STD-461/464, MIL-STD-704, MIL-STD-810, DO-160, DO-178, DO-254 standards.
  • Strong experience with power electronics design and simulation (P-Spice, MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, etc.).
  • Expertise in motor control theory, including BLDC/PMSM motor controllers.
  • Experience with EMI/EMC design considerations and mitigation strategies.
  • Familiarity with SAE ARP4754 and ARP4761 standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; experience in proposal writing and customer presentations.
  • Experience in the development of aerospace actuators and motor controllers is good to have.
  • Experience with aerospace safety and certification processes is good to have.
  • Knowledge of root cause analysis and corrective action methodologies is good to have.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to coach, mentor, and guide junior engineers is good to have.
